Hook ups & deals

So we've realised here at CanAussie that one of the things you miss when you move countries is the networks of people you have built at home - if you know someone who works somewhere, you can get a cheap deal. When you arrive in a city, you desperately need some stuff, or when you're staying in that city, it's nice to know of places who'll look after you.

So, we've made it our mission to find a few businesses around Canada that will help Australians working in Canada out. If you know of a business that is in a position to give Aussies a discount in your area, give us a holler through the contact page and we'll stick it up here.

Global:

Travel Insurance: We've worked out a deal with World Nomads Travel Insurance to get you a cheaper deal - a whopping 3%! Still, as you'll read in our Travel Insurance article, they're cheaper than a lot of other providers out there.

To get the deal, use this link, then enter in the coupon code "Aussie3", and that'll compute your discount. Simple!

Foreign Currency Exchange: CanAussie has hooked up a deal with OzForex and CanadianForex so they can offer you a good deal on transferring money overseas, so for example from Australia to Canada, or anywhere else really. Here's the gist of the deal:

  • Better exchange rates than banks and pretty much anyone else (see the example below)
  • First two transactions free, then CA$12 from then on. Their normal fee is CA$15
  • No transfer fees above AU$10k
  • Minimum CAD$100 transfer, rather than their usual minimum of CA$2000

To get this deal, use this link to go to the OzForex site, their software recognises you've come from here and will sort things out appropriately.

Vancouver:

Sarah Stranan Osteopathy

http://www.strananosteopathy.ca/
Vancouver Osteopathic Center
201-2475 Bayswater St.
Vancouver, BC

Sarah is an Australian who has set up a practice in Kitsilano,

Vancouver. From her website "Osteopathy is a holistic manual medicine which aims to restore optimal health through a combination of hands on therapy, exercises and lifestyle advice." Basically it's somewhere similar to physiotherapy, but nowhere near as invasive, and also treats the whole body rather than focussing in and fixing one part, and not concentrating on what may have lead to that part packing it in. Sarah is offering anyone who mentions CanAussie to her 25% off your initial visit. Also check out her blog page for hints and tips on how to deal with Vancouver related injuries, aches and pains... as in, what you get from skiing and snowboarding!

Visage International School for Hair
http://www.visageschool.com/
4954 Kingsway, Burnaby
Phone: 604-437-4448

It's tough when you land in a place and have no idea where to get a hair cut. We started off living in Burnaby and I tried most of the hair places in Metrotown, most of which charged $30+ and generally sucked. Visage on the other hand (I'm talking from a blokes perspective btw!) is cheap, generally cheerful, and usually available. Their student haircuts for $8 are usually pretty good, depending on how green the student is, and you may only occasionally have to do some fixing at home... usually sideburns. Still, it's cheaper than anywhere else I've found so far, and certainly does the job. They don't know about this, and it's not really a discount or deal, but hell, information is good!
