Local road atlas
If you plan on driving in Vancouver at all, or even getting about on foot, then having a good map is a great idea. We’ve had this one since we got here, and it has been invaluable for finding the right spot, navigating the one way streets downtown, or even finding short cuts. Ours is becoming a bit dog eared through use, but it fits in the side pocket of the vehicle without a problem, and the mapping extends out into the valley (Abbotsford area and beyond) if you want to head that direction, particularly if you are heading to somewhere like Golden Ears Provincial Park. Back Roads Atlas
If you plan on going further afield and want to get one book to cover most places, we got the Canada Back Road Atlas, which has been reasonably useful so far, and should become more useful as we put plans into action and head further east of Vancouver. This map is great for showing smaller campsites and back roads, and defines the difference between provincial campgrounds and forestry campgrounds, which can make the difference between roughing it with a pit loo or nothing (which can be good!), or the provincial camp grounds are usually well equipped. The back roads are usually accurate too, and means you can go for a sojourn down a logging road without wondering where you may end up, and whether you can get back again…
