What to bring with you

Here's a quick (and definitely not complete) list of items you'll probably need to bring with you:

  • Passport (essential!)
  • Work Permit Letter of Introduction (essential! Although you can apply for it while overseas and in Canada)
  • A fixed address to tell the folks at Customs when you first enter Canada - could be a mates place, the first hotel, whatever - they WILL ask for it!
  • Digital camera (essential!)
  • Cash (it will cost a bit to live before you get work, including paying the first part of rent and bond, and if you are planning on living in the ski fields, don't plan on saving any money!)
  • Drivers license/extra form of ID
  • The address of wherever you plan to stay on the first night
  • Rental references (notes from people saying how nice you were to rent to always help)
  • Australian credit check
  • Notes from your previous insurers saying how good you were to insure too (should help cut your premium costs if you plan to buy a car)
  • Some sort of proof that you have been driving for longer than 3 years (unless you want to be a P plater again if you have to get a BC license)
  • Some sort of proof that you have been driving for longer than 10 years (if you have been driving for longer than this, you get an upfront discount on your insurance, no matter how many acccidents you've had.  Go figure.)
  • Work references if you have them (with the time difference, it can be difficult for potential employers to contact ex-employers)
  • Warm clothing (particularly if you plan on venturing to the interior during the winter, as -30c can be painful!)
  • Summer clothing (it gets frikkin' hot in the interior during the summer, as it's the land of extremes!)
  • Your senses of fun and adventure, as well as your wits!
Canada is awesome, but you'll experience it at its best if you are prepared!

Most folks transfer their cash overseas using their bank, when they could do it cheaper using online providers like OzForex.com. We compared these guys with ANZ and found some good savings, and also get you a deal.
