Golden Ears

So you've come up with a grand idea of moving to Canada and working there for a while - fantastic choice! Canada has some of the most beautiful country in the world, some of the best ski resorts in the world, and also the most livable english speaking city in the world, Vancouver, as voted by a bunch of people.

But how do you do this?

Follow the little path laid out through the articles and you should be over there and living the life in no time. We've put together a bit of a list here of what you should do along the way:

  1. Apply for your work permit ASAP, as  it takes at least a few weeks to come through
  2. Think about what you are coming across here to do, then book your airline tickets AFTER you get your work permit
  3. Get Travel Insurance! Also use World Nomads and get a discount through the CanAussie deal.
  4. Be prepared for customs and what you'll go through when you are arriving in Canada
  5. Get temporary accommodation in the first big city you land in, as you will have to...
  6. Apply for your SIN number
  7. Look into where you are going to live in Canada - there's some excellent places across the country, including Vancouver and Whistler
  8. Before you get a job, you'll probably need a bank account so they have some where to put your cash
  9. Look into the best method of transferring your cash from Aus to Canada. Hint, it's not using a bank!
  10. Apply for the Medical Services Plan (MSP) or local equivalent as soon as you get a permanent residence - if you have this, then you most likely won't have to pay for expensive travel insurance
  11. Find a place to work

Enjoy yourself! Don't forget to say hi and introduce yourself in the forums, and check out the trips that we have in there - the list is building all the time!

  Sending Money Overseas
Most folks transfer their cash overseas using their bank, when they could do it cheaper using online providers like OzForex.com. We compared these guys with ANZ and found some good savings, and also get you a deal.
