The US will start charging for getting a new or renewing an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) come September 2. This is the mandatory online component of Visa Waiver Permit (VWP – green sheet) program that you fill out when you are
entering the US itself.
The ESTA must be filled out before you leave on your trip, and covers you for up to two years. Basically it’s just a bunch of questions making sure you’re not a terrorist or importing Indonesian micro-puppies or something.
From September 2 they will be charging $4 administration fee, plus a $10 travel promotion fee, so $14 in total. This will be payable by credit card online only.
SO, get your ESTA now, even if you’re only vaguely planning on going to the states in the next two years sometime... it’s free right now!
