Introduction thread

Hi all,

I'm Jared, and I'm the creator of CanAussie.com.  I figured I may as well get the ball rolling and introduce myself - I've lived and worked in Canada twice, first in 2000/2001 where I lived and worked in both Whistler and Vancouver, and now I'm back in the country and working as a marketer for a company in Richmond, BC.

I hope you like CanAussie.com and stick around and help me build this community - I'm excited, as it's a pretty special group of Aussies that comes across to Canada to work as well as kick back and enjoy themselves.

And remember, as they always say in Whistler - "Just another fa'canaussie!"

Re: Introduction thread

G'day... he he.. I know, its old, but i still love it.
I'm Nat. I'm Jared’s girlfriend. I think CanAussie.com is the best thing since Magic Egg Pavs…. That’s what I’ve been paid to say anyway...
No seriously, I think it’s going to be a handy insight into how to go about participating in the ‘Great Aussie Invasion’. I know we could have used something like this when we first got here.
This isn’t the first time I have lived here either, I did a ski season at Whistler in 2003/04. Where, as most other Aussies do up there, I boarded and partied way way more than I worked.  Now I’m an architect working in Gastown. Which is also lots of fun, but far better on the wallet.  ;o)
My role so far in this shiny new website isn’t huge, but I was there to say ‘yes Jared, that’s a top idea Jared’ at the right times. big_smile  Also I designed the title font.  Yay!
Have fun!

*waves*  Hi guys!

Should have called this TasCan Jared!  Website looks great, 'specially the title font wink
Anyways, I'm an Aussie working in Dunedin, New Zealand, where I have developed a taste for travel, living in new countries, beautiful natural scenery and terrain, laughing at silly accents and skiing.  Apart from NZ, Canada is one of the only other countries in the world with all this on offer wink (about the accents, I get laughed at more...)
Hopefully heading in a Vancouver-ish direction in 18-24 months once I have completed my graduate program with my current company.  Looking forward to being a JAFA somewhere else!

Howdy,

I'm Karl, and as luck has it, I am acquainted with with these three monkeys above me (Okay, so Jared is the only *real* monkey, apart from me... tongue ) I am in Vancouver currently, and will be visiting these shores regularly on short stints in my role as a Tech Sales Manager for a small software firm in Hobart, Tasmania. I'm thinking about coming over here on a more permanent basis - we shall see what eventuates!

I leave Vancouver tonight at 6pm, and although I miss my girlfriend and my mates back home dearly, I don't want to go! This city is great, and the backdrop of the various mountains is breathtaking to say the least!

G'Day smile

I'm Michael, been thinking about leaving good old Melbourne and heading over to Canada for the snow! I heard of this website though Jaz on RSlibertyclub!

Its something I have been waiting to do for years, but just never been in the right position to do it. But I am not wanting to leave more then ever!
At this stage I am fishing for information on the job climate over there, esp in the IT sales area.

Anyways I am loving the information on this site so far.

Catch you around!

Re: Introduction thread

Hey Molloy,

Have you checked out the Quick Reference Guide (http://www.canaussie.com/quick-referenc … ence-guide) yet? That should take you through most of the steps that you need to follow in order to be able to work over here. Once you've got your work permit, you're good to go, and it's basically like moving to a different city in Aus and looking for work... not too hard, just a few differences. I've known a couple of sparkies to move over here and they've got work reasonably easily. There's lots of building going on over here at the moment, particularly for the Olympics - I'd just say (as I just did in another thread), make sure you know where you are at for the Olympics period itself, as accommodation is going to be scarce!

Mickey, I AM Jaz on RSlib wink Things seem to be picking up around here in the High Tech industry, and Vancouver is always good for that sort of thing anyway. Apart from the job places mentioned elsewhere on CanAussie (and I'm not sure if I've mentioned this elsewhere already), but checkout T-Net (http://www.bctechnology.com/scripts/main.cfm) for careers - their RSS feed is good, and it's just jobs in the High Tech (their term over here) arena.

Snow is almost here! Just had a weekend in the Okanagan Valley where it got down to -8 or so over night, and +6 or so during the day!

Re: Introduction thread

Hellooooooooo!! lol

I'm Brooke. I have been in Canada now for 4 months from SUNNY Queensland - Brisbane in fact. As much as I miss the sun, family and friends, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.

I have been lucky enough to meet the wonderful Jared & Nat and even get a little intoxicated on occasions with them ("No mum, I don't drink!") and they are the greatest people. I cannot thank Jared enough for creating this website as it got me through EVERYTHING I needed to know about the big move, visas, jobs, accom.... I can go on! Thank you thank you!

So Canada is my third country I've lived in and the others are Australia (obviously) and UK. All provide great experiences and we are so lucky to be given an opportunity to live and experience another country. I have met my AMAZING boyfriend here and have no plans in the near future of heading home. I even finally have family coming to visit me next year - whoop whoop!

I work in admin and at a casino and both have provided me with wonderful friends (and the money is nothing to sneeze at) I live out of Van in Surrey and no, it's not as dodgy as Jared says roll Hehe!

Keep up the great work Jared and LOVE the title font Nat wink

Brooke!!

(yes Jared - just discovered the programming page for all my colours/smilies! big_smile Told you I'm bored!!)

Re: Introduction thread

Hi Everyone,

We're a couple of late-20s guys living in Perth planning a year or so of Canadian adventure. I work in IT, my partner is a baker. Our total experience of Canada is a few drunken days in Toronto when we got married in March (on St Paddy's Day, no less). We hope to land in mid-June. We only know one person, I have no idea if anyone will rent the house, no idea if our cat will like living with the mother in law, no idea if we can afford it, no idea if we'll find a place that isn't a matchbox, but… it'll work somehow. It'll be dumb and fun and a waste of time and money, but if we don't do it now with the WHP, we'll miss out.

Just saying 'hi' for now, always good to get to know at least a few people in the same hemisphere.

Rgds,

- Ian & Aidan.

Re: Introduction thread

Hello everyone, my name is Jake, I'm 20, a uni student studying commerce, I live in NSW (a little while out from Wollongong) and I've been wanting to go to Canada for the past 4 or so years. I just got my Working Holiday Visa approved purchased my one way ticket, I will be leaving on August 1st to Vancouver which means I still have a bit to go yet. I'm very excited, but admittedly a little freaked out but that is all part of the fun! I was originally meant to be coming out with friends but for various reasons, one couldn't afford to come and another gave up on the idea (at least for the time being). I backpacked around Europe for 3 months last year on my own, but met lots of awesome people, so I'm hoping I can do the same in Canada smile

Welcome Jake! Nice blog too, love what you've done with the polaroids at the top wink

You'll meet a bunch of great people while you're over here, lots of folks traveling over here in the same boat. What are you going to do once you get here?

Re: Introduction thread

Thanks haha I see you did similar with your blog. I'm not sure what I'll be getting up to, it's not like me to not make plans for something like this, but I'll have a fair bit saved up and can afford to spend a fair bit of time looking for work if need be. Also a Canadian friend I met in Europe has offered the couch at their place which would save me a bit of dough to start up with, it's like a block or two from GM Place which will give me a chance to see some ice hockey matches hopefully! A snow job would be great, just started getting into snowboarding in the past year, so a job at the snow would help me get out there a bit more I'd imagine, but jobs won't be available at the time I get there, so I'll have to wait and see. I'm probably going over with IEP, don't know if you've heard of them but they are a volunteer organisation that help you organise your SIN number, bank account, help you get a job etc etc. I've had a few friends use them and decent jobs pretty quickly.

The following year I should have my degree sorted and a Management or HR position (I'll be doing distance education whilst in Canada so that I don't overly delay my degree) would be great if I could get a related position in Canada eventually.

Re: Introduction thread

Hey Jake - just a quick word as I have started writing an article for here about those kind of IEP companies... You can do everything that you've listed on your own for free as these companies don't NOT charge - if that makes sense?? Please read my articles on getting a SIN and Bank Account and you'll see how easy it is. I had a lot of friends pay a lot of money to these companies and ended up doing everything pretty much themselves, but lost out on money. Start looking on Craigslist for jobs and that's pretty much what these companies do you for too.

Re: Introduction thread

Hey Brooke, the main reason I was going with IEP was because of the employment side. I've had a number of friends go with them and were set up with decent jobs almost straight away and I figured it might be the best, the faster I get employed the better, my biggest fear about coming is that I won't be able to get a job! I realise it's quite simple to set up the bank account and SIN if you go about it the right way, just for that peace of mind I think I still want to go with them for job help. Appreciate the advice though, thank you.

By the way, I do wish there was a better job site then Craigslist and Monster, can't believe they don't have something like Seek. Lots of the ads on Craigslist don't include much information at all on what they require. Also doesn't appear to be many jobs available on these websites - I've heard that lots of employers in Canada don't like to list and them and it's more a word of mouth recruitment process.

Re: Introduction thread

Hey all!

I think I've been a member here for a little bit but been a terrible lurker, and then forgot my password and that was that. Well, I'm de-lurking! I'm Sandra, on the cusp of 25 (eep) from good old PERTH. Though I would say I've been a Canadian at heart for about 20 years now and this year I'm going to be making my third attempt at moving to Vancouver! I've had a work permit each of those times - the first time I went to Vancouver in 2007, I arrived at the airport and realised I'd left my permit at home. Noice. I ended up staying in Oshawa, Ontario, for three months with my (then) boyfriend and his family. The second attempt at moving, I was literally a couple of weeks from going (I had sold EVERYTHING in my house, finished up my job, and all that)... then stupidly got myself involved with a guy (story of my life) and a few months later my Canada savings had gone. My permit is about to lapse, but I'm going to get it a third time and try again later this year or when my current job contract ends in Feb next year. smile

My next trip to Van will be in October and I'm going to furiously look for a job in the three weeks I'm there in the hopes I'll find something and can come back and hand in my notice and never look back! But... I don't have the greatest track record at my attempts to move. This year has GOT to be it, hasn't it?

Anyways, I have a tendency to tell my life story to anyone who'll listen (and even those who don't), so forgive me for my essay. I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions in the future!

Re: Introduction thread

That's crazy Sandy! This time, remember your passport, fight off the blokes, make it to the airport in time, and I'm sure you'll be fine!

At least you've been here already, so you have some idea of what to expect. I'm sure many have heard of the fabled land of Cananananada and the emerald city of Wancoofar and decided to move there for the hell of it - sh!ts n giggles, ya know?! wink

Re: Introduction thread

hi all,

i'm darren and im 24, im at the start of getting ready to make the move to canada to live and work.  i'm a qualified carpenter and have been for about 6 years in total,  i also have my cert 1 snowboard instructor ticket which i got in keystone colorado USA and loved it.  my ideal time in canada would be to work as a chippy in the warmer months and as an instructor in the winter months,  i'm looking to make the move in about 12 months at this stage and was wondering if it would be best to have a job lined up prior to making the move over or would it be easy enough for a carpenter to get a job?  i'm not to sure on which area i want to start in but the overall goal is to see as much of canada as i can (not that much different to everyone else really)  so reading about the road trips has got me up and about and wanting to come over now just for them...  any help will be great and im sure i will have more questions later. the website is very helpful and easy to use. thanks again and look forward to the whole experience.

Re: Introduction thread

Hey Darren,

You hear of some folks who are able to line up work prior to coming over and some who can't, so it can't hurt trying. In saying that, you're chances of getting work when you're actually in the area are much better than if you were actually elsewhere!

The timber industry has taken quite a dive around here recently with the financial crisis, so I'd suggest keeping an eye on the job websites for a couple of months while you're still in Aus to see if suitable positions for you are coming up. You'll probably have no problems in the ski fields though, just check out when the mountain you want to work at is having their hiring fair so you at least make it up there for that.

Either way, I'm sure you'll have fun! Let us know how you go too smile

Re: Introduction thread

Names Josh. I used canaussie to help fill in the blanks before I got here. Jared - Great webstie.

We(gf and I) have been here about a month now, living downtown and furiously looking for work like most aussies in Vancouver in seems. I tell you one thing, rent is not cheap but it seems minimum wage is less than Australia! I don't know how some of these people survive around here with out high paying jobs!

I'm from Perth and plan to be in BC until at least the end of the year and hopefully well in to the next...Been trying to suss out Vancouver fishing but not much luck. If this weather clears up soon I will post up a fishing report haha

Cheers
Josh
