Going home. How do I prove I'm not working here still?

Hey all,

This WHP is my first (and as a now 21 soon to be 22 year old that has caught the travel bug, I doubt it will be my last) and my visa runs out on June 21st this year. I am just wondering when I go home do I have to hand my WHP into Aussie customs? I have been to the US twice while I have been here and that is where my idea is coming from... The little green card they staple to your passport on the way in is removed by Canadian customs to prove you're no longer in the States... Is it the same? Where do I hand it in? Do I hand it in? How do I prove I'm not here when my visa runs out?

Hoping someone will see this and know what to do!!!!

Thanks! big_smile

Re: Going home. How do I prove I'm not working here still?

Hey,

I first came here in 2008, left one month before my permit expired in 2009, and nobody took out my permit. They didn't ask anything about it at the airport, they are more focused on where you are going smile So my old permit was left in my passport. It didn't cause any issues when I got my next permit in 2010 so I don't think it matters. I have no idea how they actually know if you have left, but as far as I know you don't have to hand it in. Maybe someone else will know more? Hope this helps smile

They don't take it. I got my new one today. The guy even looked at my old one and folded it back up before stapling my new one in!

Congratulations Becal on getting your new permit!!

Do you mind saying which border you went to to get your new permit? As I'm in vancouver and going to have to do the trip soon, trying to decide on the best border. Which one did you go to? and how did you do it? drive, walk etc? was it a processed quite quickly? Any info would be so helpful! thanks!

Hi Mary, I went to Point Roberts. I just caught the skytrain to Bridgeport Station, then the 601 bus took me most of the way - walked about a kilometre to the border. Processed pretty quickly! I was there about half an hour all up including the American side. Benefit of walking over the border is you get to jump the huge line of cars big_smile

Re: Going home. How do I prove I'm not working here still?

that's great! thanks so much for responding! I was thinking about point roberts but unsure because I hadn't known anyone who had done it recently. but now I know phew! smile I'm gonna get someone to drive me as close to the border as I can then walk over and back. It's not that far to walk over the US side and do the loop back to the canada building is it?

one more question...did the border person ask you for proof of 2 years of travel insurance? I'm still not sure if I should purchase 2 years worth or not.

thanks again!

No worries, yeah good idea! Nah, it's not far at all to walk, the buildings are quite close to each other. Maybe 20-40 metres?

No I didn't get asked about insurance at all. I had it all there, and proof of funds but all they asked was where I worked and got me to write down my current address and phone number for them.

that's great, thanks so much for that info!
ok one last question...did they write where you worked on your permit? that's the one thing I was worried about, because it is meant to be "open" right, I didn't want to say a workplace to them and they type it on the form.

Re: Going home. How do I prove I'm not working here still?

No, it's still an open permit :-) I'm pretty sure they didn't write my workplace down at all, only my address and phone number. Got asked by 4 different border people (two americans, two Canadians) so I think it's just one of their stock standard questions.
