Lying to border official - Visa

I made a mistake a couple of months ago while crossing from the US to Canada. I had undeclared items, and the border official did me for lying to a border official as well. In hindsight a stupid decision, don't even know why I did it now I look back. Just all my friends said that's what is done.

So my question is, will this have any bearing on a WHP application, I know it wont be pretty but hope it wont wipe me out? I am looking to reapply in 10 months. If it is something which will severely hinder my chances, then will a sponsored work visa give me a better chance.  Been with my current employer for 12 months and they want me to stay.

Anyone else tried to apply for a visa after an incident with Canadian Border. I wouldn't think I am the only idiot.

Thank you for any information.
