Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

Hi,

I will be applying for my 3rd whp visa early next year and want some information from any of you with crossing the border to renew.
Last time I got my 2nd visa I had gone back to australia first so I just went through the vancouver airport immigration which was really simple, just standing at the desk while they process it, not many questions.

This time as I am in vancouver I am thinking about doing a border crossing run but I wanted some more info on exactly what happens there? I went through a border crossing last time when I went on the bus to bellingham and back in a day but I wasn't renewing a visa then so I wanted to know how it happens? do you go into an office? are there a lot of questions?

I also wanted to ask how have most of you crossed the border to renew? and did you do it alone? I know there is the bus but last time i had to wait about 4 hours for the bus to come back from the US over here. I could have my boyfriend drive me over and back but he is canadian, and I don't want there to be any questions or interrogation about our relationship, living arrangements, future plans etc. Has anyone ever renewed with a canadian partner driving them across and were there a lot of questions?

Or is there another alternative for a quick border crossing that is faster than the bus, has anyone tried the train? I don't suppose anyone can walk over the border? haha Any information would be much appreciated, especially with what happens when you are in a car with someone else, do you both have to get out and go in the office etc? Can your partner tell the US guys his reason for crossing the border is just to drive you over without any hassles?

Any advice much appreciated,

Thanks!

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

Hey Mary,

I think it's actually easier to do it on the land border. Best way to do it (I've done this myself and with friends) if you want a quick trip is just to drive down to the border, cross it (you have to enter the US, it's a legal requirement) then come back through. Doesn't matter who you've got with you, but you all generally have to go into the building. They'll process you, your friends will hang out for a while, you'll get your documents and you'll be on the way again.

I went down to Point Roberts to do mine one time, but I don't think I'd do that again as they screwed it up because it was the guys first time doing one. Peace Arch would be my pick next time.

Best of luck, and let us know how you go!

J

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

Thanks Jared for all the info.

I was also thinking about the train to cross the border but I just found that post from a while back where someone said the officer wrote up the permit in handwriting and it was a big hassle to sort out afterwards. I was thinking about the Bus also but I heard someone held up the whole bus for an hour whilst getting their permit too, so it looks like driving is the best way, or else flying.

If anyone else has any recent border crossing experiences, please post! thanks!

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

Ok, this is probably a really dumb question but...

when getting a new WHP when you're living in Canada, do you have to go cross the border and get a new one on the exact day that your old one expires, or can you do it a few days before? Just wondering because my current one will expire on a Tuesday and it would be a lot more convenient to be able to do it on the weekend!!

Cheers.

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

Heya Becal,

Much better doing it a few days beforehand! Then if there's any issues, you've got a bit of time to correct it before D-Day.

Let us know how you go smile

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

Hey Becal,

I actually emailed the CIC directly about this recently and they said you can cross the border to get your new visa anytime after you have your new letter of introduction. just be aware the current permit will be cancelled and you lose the time left on it. So should be fine, I am planning on renewing as soon as I get my new letter of intro.

Hope this helps smile

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

You don't have to drive..  here's a blog of a guy who did UBC to Seattle via public transport for $4 - http://www.travelblog.org/North-America … 27250.html smile

While Point Roberts is probably one of the easier ones to get to, according to CBSA site, it doesn't technically offer Immigration services, so you're probably better off with one of the Pacific Highway ones - http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/contact/list … html#d1632

Re: Crossing the Border to Renew WHP

thanks so much for the info.

I also read that point roberts technically doesn't offer immigration services, yet I have heard of a few people who have got the work permit there, I am leaning towards point roberts because I know I can walk over and back and it's not that far, and I hear it is far less busy than the other crossings.

I have thought about peace arch but I'm not sure how far it is to walk over and back, has anyone walked that one? some of them don't have foot paths which is a little worrying haha. and I heard there are bigger lineups there. Again if anyone has crossed recently please share your stories of where and how it was.

Thanks!
