Staying in Canada permanently/visa extension

Hey Guys,

Thought I'd ask my question on here and see if anyone else has been in my situation or can offer any advice...

So I'm currently on the 2 year WHP however I won't be able to reapply coz I've passed the age cutoff sad  boohoo!

I really want to stay and I'm trying to figure out how..I've been researching on the Govt website about permanent residency and temporary working visas etc...here is my issue tho..the processing time for permanent residency is approx 52 months.  My current visa expires in june 2012.  Does anyone know can I apply for permanent residency and keep working or do I have to apply for a visa extension too?  It says total temporary working visa is 4 years...does that include the 2 years I have been on the WHP?

I know this sounds kinda complicated but has anyone else who was on the WHP immigrated permanently?  How long did it take?  What was the process?

any help would be appreciated!!

thanks smilesmilesmilesmilesmile

Re: Staying in Canada permanently/visa extension

Hi Robyn,

If you haven't already, this may be the time to talk to an immigration expert/lawyer, just to see what is and isn't possible.

Unfortunately I don't have anyone I can think of who has been in a similar situation, so if you do find out some more information, please post it up here for others!

Best of luck,

Jared

Re: Staying in Canada permanently/visa extension

Hi Robyn,

I'm actually doing research on this myself. I can apply for one more visa but I'm approaching the age cutoff too and would like to know how to apply for permanent residency. The processing time is 52 months? wow! that is a long time, I have met quite a few people who have got PR, but I'm not sure how long it took them, surely there must be a faster way. Is there anyway you can get your employer to sponsor you for the temporary work visa? I'm not sure if the whp years count for that....I do know of one person who said while they were waiting to get their PR processed they were granted a temp work visa. I really need to find out more info on this myself, and the lawyers are so expensive.

Is there an email on the govt website to ask for questions? If I do find out any more info I will post it and please keep us updated with any info you come across too.

Thanks!

Re: Staying in Canada permanently/visa extension

Canada has a bunch of different programs to get PR - the 52 months is for the Federal Skilled Worker program, which is only really open to a small number of positions now, to try to get that number down, and many of them only if you have a job offer.

Much better to look at the Provincial Nominee Program for your province - only takes about 18 months, and once the province approves you (usually only a month or two), you can use that approval to get a work permit to bridge while you're waiting for the PR app.

Re: Staying in Canada permanently/visa extension

From what I understand, if you apply for PR before your work permit expires, you can stay in the country on your current conditions.  An immigration lawyer will be able to help you work through the options and the whole, painful bureaucratic process!  Good luck!
