Re: Tax returns from Canada

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay! So I just saw this on the homepage the other day, decided to have a look at taxback.com. Jumped online, filled out the information bit. Within a couple of hours I was sent the application package, had a phone call and was able to talk to someone online about my questions. Within 3 days from filling in that information query, I have sent all my docs in, and have been given my estimate. They charged me the 12.5% fee and it was soooo simple!!!!!

When I rang HR Block in regards to them doing my taxes, they had to transfer me through to 3 different office to find someone who was 'knowledgeable' about Australian Holiday workers tax and when I asked questions, he couldn't answer. They also quoted me at $130 or something to do it.

So glad I happened to stumble across this article and how easy taxback.com was. I also put 'CanAussie' in the "Where did you hear about us?" bit smile

Re: Tax returns from Canada

Hey, thanks for this article! Very very helpful. One quick question though: we are currently sitting down and filling out piles of forms for the starting-a-new-job-headache. The main ones causing confusion are the "Personal Tax Credits Return" forms, one for Canada Revenue Agency, and one for BC specifically. Are these the forms where we need to class ourselves as Non-Residents?

Thanks in advance! Ange

Re: Tax returns from Canada

Just curious, why are we classed as non-residents for tax purposes. From my quick read of the subject I would come to the conclusion that I'm a resident for tax purposes.

The Canada Revenue Agency states that if you spend more than 183 days of the tax year in Canada then you are deemed a resident. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/nnrsdnts/nd … eng.html#d

Re: Tax returns from Canada

Hi,

I am hoping someone could answer a few questions for me, I was working in Canada in 2009 and when I got back to Australia I did my taxes from there through an accountant in Toronto that was reccomended to me through a travel work program, I did get my taxes done however it took about 6 months and so now I am back in Vancouver again and need to do my taxes for 2010, can anyone recommend any accountants to me?
I only started working in december so I will have a very little return so ideally don't want to spend too much money on an accountant when I am not going to get much money back and also I would ideally like someone to talk to in person as this can get quite confusing. I read the article however I asked and these people don't have any offices in Vancouver.
I just want to make sure I fill out the forms correctly and try to get this done right. I understand if I don't owe any money the deadline of April won't apply? can anyone confirm this?
And also regarding the deemed as resident issue, if I was here for more than 183 days in 2010 does that mean I am considered a resident?
And the fact that I was working back home in Australia for the first half of the year, will I have to declare the income I made over there?
Ideally I would like to find an accountant over here who I can talk to, but as yet hard to find. If anyone has any helpful information, please reply.

Thanks!

Mary

Are there any updates about the whole resident vs non-resident thing?
