Finding work in Toronto

Hi guys,
I have known about this website for a while and has helped me out. Now i will just get straight to the point. I have just moved to Toronto travelling round the US for 5 months. I have been here 2 weeks and sent out countless resumes and haven't heard a thing back. Im really trying to get in to bartending work, but It seems here if u have over 2 years experience or if your a girl, u get a foot straight in to the door.
I'm sort of getting a bit down in the dumps as bartending is really what I wanna do ( As I need $$$ ASAP). But i have been told it does pick up in the next 2-3months though.

So does anyone have any tips on getting work (preferably in a bar/pub) In Toronto? To me its does seem extremely competitve.

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Hey AUSACA,

No real direct help, but it seems like you have to work your way up over here in Canada when you're reasonably fresh off the boat, no matter what you do.

Could be worth bussing for a bit, prove your worth, work your way up? Show that you're willing to do anything (within reason!) and prove yourself valuable.

Maybe move to a smaller town too? I know someone who got work in a bar in a smaller town in the rockies pretty easily... out in the stick an Aussie will be something new & different, whereas they're used to us in the cities these days smile

Best of luck!

J

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Yeah cheers mate,
I have applied for jobs for bussing and barbacks as well and still no luck unfortunately. I have applied anywhere and everywhere here In oronto and nothing back. Though i think I am being a little impateint as I have only been here 2 weeks. It seems here In Toronto you got to know someone to get you a job.

Thats not a bad Idea bout moving out somewhere 'in the stix' so to speak. I suppose u haven't heard what Ottawa is like have ya?

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Yeah, that sort of stuff can take a while... I remember when I was in Vancouver back in 2000 I was searching for a month, then ended up getting something completely different. I was looking for restaurant/bar work like yourself, but then ended up selling paint at a hardware store!

Ottawa is basically like Canberra - lots of pollies. It's probably less of a traveller hub, so you might have some luck there. Won't know if you don't try it! Nice town too... I kinda prefer it to Toronto smile

Re: Finding work in Toronto

G'day lads,

J, I remember in my thread you mentioned that August is a quiet time for hiring. I am planning to arrive in Toronto in Lat August as I will first travel the US.

I will be looking for work in the finance/ banking sector in case I cannot secure an internal transfer with Macquarie Bank. Would you advise that I go to Toronto earlier than August or much later? Do you have any mates in the banking/ finance industry who might know when is the best time to apply for roles in that sector?

Cheers.

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Yo,

If anything, later may be the way to go - the closer to winter you get, the less likely folks are to be taking holidays.

No real contacts in the banking industry I don't think, but maybe there's a discussion forum for them?

Let us know how you go,

J

Re: Finding work in Toronto

I've been corresponding with some Aussies on Facebook who are part of the Aussies in Toronto Group.
They mentioned that it is best to job search during Spring/ Summer and not in Autumn/ Winter due to the horrendous weather.
I will be in Toronto from late July and I have prepared myself financially to survive for 6 months however, the worst can happen is that by October I could still be without a job as I am trying to ensure that I land a job in the finance sector.
How much of a factor or how much of an obstacle is the harsh autumn/ winter weather?

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Winter can be pretty draining and a lot of people don't get enough Vitamin D, but I think you're well and truly prepared if you've got yourself financially ready for 6 months worth of waiting. Pick up a retail job working weekends an you'll have enough to supplement your savings and that will still leave you clear for interviews during the week... More than one way to skin a cat smile

AUSACA, Hey Ausaca,

Did you find work? Did you have to move out to the sticks or Ottawa? I just came from there..

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Hi J,

You explained that anyone who just arrives has to work their way up.

As mentioned, I am hoping to start working in the finance/ banking sector of Toronto, do you think it is a good idea to do non-paid work for a month (since I will have savings)?

This idea came about as my cousin did the non-paid IT work after leaving university - the time when the IT bubble burst, and thus, he eventually became a temporary/ contract worker and then became a permanent.

Are Canadians like Aussies, in the sense that Aussies like to give people a go? Are Canadians open or conservative? According to one of my mates in Macquarie Bank who is from Toronto (when I found out he was from Canada, he became my best mate LOL) believed that Canadians in general more more closed that Aussies. What do you think?

Thanks,

Re: Finding work in Toronto

It sort of depends on what opportunities come up I think - if something comes up and it sounds reasonable and it's with a larger business, jump on it, but if it's a small fly-by-nighter, forgeddaboudit. They really seem to respect local experience over there, so it may help somewhat in the long run... just don't let that close your mind to other opportunities though, while you're doing the volunteer stuff.

As for whether they're more closed, it really depends on whom you meet - I've had some great experiences, but I was working in Vancouver... maybe its the luck of the draw?

Re: Finding work in Toronto

Hey AUSACA,

If you haven't found work in Toronto yet or moved elsewhere, it might be an idea to try finid something a little out off Toronto... head to Union station jump on the GO train headed west and drop some resumes in the next town or two over. I'm in Burlington (about an hour out of Toronto by car OR train) and was just about to apply for jobs in Toronto when I luckily found one here. I'm in retail and it is hard to get in over here cause everyone is cutting down staff sizes.

Catching the GO trian will be a pain but if it gets you in somewhere it's at least something while you look closer to home right?
