Re: who can tell me about winnipeg?

Last time I was in Winterpeg was 15 years ago... seemed like a nice town, flat though, but the Canadian Shield (massive, massive area of lakes) is to the east if you want a bit of fishin' n campin'.

I'd say that it would be off the beaten track for Aussies for sure. I've only ever heard brief comments from Aussies there, so I reckon you'd still be a rarity, so something that would spike folks interest - a good thing!

It'd be really interesting to experience a whole 4 seasons in Winnipeg... winters are fierce when in full force, but apparently the bluebell days when it's not being fierce make up for it.

Let us know how you go if you do end up going there!

Re: who can tell me about winnipeg?

Hi,

I lived in Winnipeg from Nov 09 to May 10 and found employment within the first two weeks of being there. I guess it all depends what kind of work you do. I was in Property Administration.

Re: who can tell me about winnipeg?

workopolis.com is the best employment webiste in my opinion for winnipeg, also check winnipeg free press.

winters can be brutal, and i never imagined what -40 would feel like coming from Oz, but its surprisingly ok - and you can pretty much get from one end of town to the other in Winnipeg without going outdoors.

If you end up going to Winnipeg, I definitely suggest finding a place near Osborne Village

Good luck!

Re: who can tell me about winnipeg?

to give you an idea this is the map where osborne village is:

http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&sour … 5&z=15

if you scan your eyes just directly right to where donald and stradbrook meet this is where i lived (which was a 5 min walk from osborne, and in my opinion one of the nicest and safest places to live in winnipeg). Dont line in the north end. shootings stabbings etc. polo park is the main shopping centr (you can google it) but if you work downtown its a bit far out. depends on how much youre willing to pay for rent i guess.

And best off not to live directly downtown due to all the natives. Can be pretty rough sometimes. Where i lived was a less than 5 min bus ride to downtown to work and bus stop was right out the front. cool building actually (maybe becasue we had the penthouse) but its 240 stradbrook avenue and called riverview apartments b, (riverview apartments a is 3 or 5 donald st (same complex) managed by quality management and 2 bedrooms are around 999 for 2 bedroom all utilities included a month.

i never met a single aussie while i was there apart from celebrating australia day at the billabong bar on osborne st. its a different experience off the regular tourist track (vancouver, toronto etc) and well worth the experience.

where im living now (whitehorse, yukon) is a much better place though! and i never thought id say it! its a town of 25,000 people way up north and believe it or not has a better climate in winter than winnipeg. there are loads of jobs up here and plenty of opportunity for the right person to escalate their career. plus there's a northern living allowance of $8.25 per day if you stay 6 months or more - you claim it against your tax. also if you stay 12 months, every year they give you $2100 to go on vacation to a canadian city of your choice. pretty sweet. such great scenery up here and things to do if you love the outdoors.
