Applying for BC ID

E-mail Print PDF

If you plan on being in BC for an extended period time, as we most are with the 2 year permit, then it is probably a good idea to get yourself some British Columbia identification.  This can come in the form of getting a BC drivers license or (the more simple choice) getting BC ID.

BC ID is just a simple piece of ID that gives your name and address and also has a photo. It can be used in place of a BC license in most places except of course anything relating to the driving or owning of a vehicle.

To apply for BC ID, all you need to do is go into your local ICBC driver licensing office with your passport and work permit and pay them $35.  They’ll take your money, ask for your address, take your photo using a little camera they have there, then they’ll send your card out in the post a week or two later (they say 4 – 6 weeks, but it took only a couple for ours).
